Most baths sold in the UK are acrylic. Kaldewei makes the case for something better. Founded in Germany in 1918 and based in Ahlen, it is the European benchmark for steel-enamel baths and shower surfaces and once you have felt the difference, it is hard to go back.

A Kaldewei bath is a single sheet of 3.5mm steel fused with glass enamel at around 850°C. The result is glass-hard: scratch, chemical and UV resistant, and it will not flex underfoot or yellow with age. Acrylic, by contrast, is drawn from a plastic sheet, often needs reinforcing with wood or fibreglass to stay rigid, can warp under stress and feels hollow.
Steel enamel is also fully recyclable, where acrylic is petroleum-based and generally is not.

There is a comfort argument too. Steel enamel acts as a thermal mass once the bath is filled, the material holds the heat and keeps the water warmer for longer than thin acrylic. During the build, we protect floors and nearby rooms. We removed the old bathroom safely. We carry out plumbing, electrics, tiling, and installation in the right order. We keep you updated on progress in clear language.

At the end, we carry out careful checks. We test taps, showers, and baths. We check the toilet flush and drainage. We test lights, fans and switches. We look over tiles, joints, and seals and fix any small issues before we finish.
Then we walk through the new bathroom with you. We explain how to care for your new surfaces and fittings. We only leave when you are happy with the result.
It is far harder, keeps its finish for decades, resists scratches and discolouration, feels solid underfoot and holds heat better. Acrylic is lighter and cheaper but wears faster.
In most cases it depends on the floor build-up and drainage, which we check at the survey, then set the surface perfectly level for a clean walk-in finish.
