Most baths sold in the UK are acrylic. Kaldewei makes the case for something better. Founded in Germany in 1918 and based in Ahlen, it is the European benchmark for steel-enamel baths and shower surfaces and once you have felt the difference, it is hard to go back.
2010
A Kaldewei bath is a single sheet of 3.5mm steel fused with glass enamel at around 850°C. The result is glass-hard: scratch, chemical and UV resistant, and it will not flex underfoot or yellow with age. Acrylic, by contrast, is drawn from a plastic sheet, often needs reinforcing with wood or fibreglass to stay rigid, can warp under stress and feels hollow.
Steel enamel is also fully recyclable, where acrylic is petroleum-based and generally is not.
It even keeps your water warmer
There is a comfort argument too. Steel enamel acts as a thermal mass once the bath is filled, the material holds the heat and keeps the water warmer for longer than thin acrylic. Kaldewei is confident enough in all of this to back its baths, trays and enamelled shower surfaces with a 30-year guarantee.
• Steel-enamel baths (Saniform Plus, Cayono, Conoduo, Puro, Ambiente)
• Floor-level and low-profile shower surfaces (Superplan, Conoflat, Nexsys)
• Shower trays and channels
• Miena steel-enamel washbowls
The key to a steel bath or floor-level shower is that it is bedded and supported correctly and set dead level which is exactly the part we take care over. We fit Kaldewei across homes and wet rooms throughout London.
We start with a free chat. You can tell us what you like and dislike about your current bathroom, what style you want next, and any ideas or inspiration you already have. You can share your budget range and timing.
We then look at the room in person or through clear photos and details. We check the layout, pipes, electrics and structure. This helps us plan a safe and smart construction approach.
Next, we share a clear plan. We suggest layouts and designs that fit your home and your taste. We point out key materials and fixture choices. We include notes on lighting, storage, and space use.
We then give you a written quote that explains the services included. We talk you through it in simple terms so you feel confident and informed before you say yes.
When you are happy, we lock in the plan. We agree on a start date and a simple schedule. We order the main fixtures and branded items. We plan when each tradesperson will be on site.
Careful management and clear communication keep the project smooth. You always know what is happening next.
During the build, we protect floors and nearby rooms. We removed the old bathroom safely. We carry out plumbing, electrics, tiling, and installation in the right order. We keep you updated on progress in clear language.
You have a single point of contact for all questions. We manage the whole project, the tradespeople and the timing, so you do not have to.
At the end, we carry out careful checks. We test taps, showers, and baths. We check the toilet flush and drainage. We test lights, fans and switches. We look over tiles, joints, and seals and fix any small issues before we finish.
Then we walk through the new bathroom with you. We explain how to care for your new surfaces and fittings. We only leave when you are happy with the result.
It is far harder, keeps its finish for decades, resists scratches and discolouration, feels solid underfoot and holds heat better. Acrylic is lighter and cheaper but wears faster.
In most cases it depends on the floor build-up and drainage, which we check at the survey, then set the surface perfectly level for a clean walk-in finish.
The manufacturer’s enamel guarantee covers the product; our own workmanship guarantee covers the installation so you are covered on both.
